Each year the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) awards individuals for their accomplishments for the year. The IHSBCA also selects the Annual North/South All Star Teams, All-State Teams, and Player of the Year when the season is concluded.

WBIW - ELLETTSVILLE – Nobody is hotter than Tate Tanksley. Tanksley, Bedford North Lawrence’s senior catcher, bashed out four hits as the Stars rumbled past Edgewood 12-5 during high school baseball action on Thursday. Over the past three games, Tanksley has gone a combined 10-for-14 at the plate. It’s no coincidence the Stars have won all three.

BEDFORD – His original plan was to go as far away from home as possible. That changed when the school next door started to recruit the next-door kid. Bedford North Lawrence senior Cal Gates, who verbally committed to Indiana University over two years ago, finally made it official, signing with the Hoosiers during a ceremony in BNL Fieldhouse on Friday evening. He’s part of a highly-regarded recruiting class for Indiana head coach Jeff Mercer, who signed 10 Indiana players among the 13 destined for his program.

Cal and Cam Gates earned high marks this summer playing for their respective teams. Cam made the 15U Midwest Stars USA Baseball squad for the USA NTIS program. The 15U Midwest Stars team finished 2nd in the USA NTIS National Cup Championship. Cal was selected to the 2024 East Coast Pro baseball showcase as well as made the championship round in the 2024 WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, FL.

BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence sophomore outfielder Cal Gates, one of the top recruits in the Midwest, has verbally committed to Indiana University. Gates, a smooth-swinging left-hander with multiple tools, stepped into BNL’s lineup as a lead-off hitter last season and finished with a .323 average and a team-high 22 runs scored. He was invited to the USA Baseball tryouts for the national 16-Under team and has been a star on the travel circuit with the Indiana Bulls.

Greg Gilbert and Collin Whittaker were named from the defensive unit, while offensive stars Dylan Nikirk, Cal Gates, Memphis Louden and Ryker Hughes were also selected by the league coaches.

The Stars scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, then survived New Albany’s serious threat in the seventh for a smashing 5-4 triumph on Monday afternoon. Will Adams fanned the final two batters to escape the final threat, and BNL scored the go-ahead run on a bunt while fencing in the Bulldogs.

The Stars, who trailed by 5 runs three different times in the finale, scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run thrown out at the plate as Southridge edged BNL 11-10 in a wild title clash. BNL (8-9) advanced to the final with an 8-3 triumph over Heritage Hills in the semifinal.

Kaedyn Bennett’s two two-out RBIs and Jonny Stone’s two home runs highlighted the outburst as BNL (7-8) ended a four-game losing skid and 31-inning scoreless streak with a much-needed victory.
